    • Lori White says:

My grandfather was Ernest Cantrell one of .any sons and daughters born to Robert and Maggie Paul Cantrell and grandson of Robert and Nancy Tibbs Cantrell. Not sure if it’s the same line of Cantrells or not…??

  2. Rosemary says:

My father is Jess Cantrell and he is from Spartanburg, South Carolina. I am just wondering if we are related.

My name is Rosemary Cantrell and my grandmother was Eva Mae Cantrell

    • rstorm1 says:

Hi Rosemary – I bet we’re cousins. :-) Right after the Revolution, John and Isaac Cantrell moved their families south to Buck Creek in the Ninety Six District, which became Spartanburg. My direct family moved West soon after, but some Cantrells stayed. Here are couple links you might like – can you trace your history back to these guys?

Cool. Glad to meet you. Is it true that Spartanburg Cantrells know secret shortcuts through the swamps?

      • Brittney Johnson says:

I found this sight by googling my great grandmother and great grandfathers name. All I know is my great grandmothers name was Eva Cantrell Emery and my Grandfathers name was Jess Cantrell. My Grandfather died while Eva was pregnant with my Grandma. My Grandma’s name is maiden Jessie Mae Cantrell. I was super close with her before she died. Once she died my dad and I lost contact. He was never the one who would come pick me up it was my grandma. Now that I’m older with kids of my own I wish there was a way I could find out more about my roots. I only know speak to one Aunt on my fathers side.

  5. Rick says:

Hi I am Rick (Richard) Cantrell living in Athens Alabama. I have traced my family history back to Richard Cantrell 1666-1753. My line from there includes Joseph, John Miller Sr., John Miller Jr., Isaac, John A (Pompey), James Buchanan Cantrell, William H., Jim, Richard T. (my dad), Richard G. (Me), Jordan, Grandsons (Kaden and Holden Cantrell). Thanks for the info on this page!

    • rstorm1 says:

Great to hear from you! Looks like we may have parted ways when Charles Cantrell – John Miller Jr.’s brother – moved through the mountains to Missouri, then Texas (?) and some of us out to the Oregon Territory. Still trying to sort it all out. Would love to know how your family landed in Alabama. Also – cool name. Has a nice ring to it. :-)

    • RB Cantrell says:

      hey i’m richard too!

      • Sandy Cole says:

Hello, I think we may be coming down the same line? When you say John Miller Jr..I am assuming that you mean John Cantrell who owned and operated a “Mill” on the Pacolet River, so people started calling him Miller John and now they are saying John Miller. In documents he has signed John M Cantrell, but, since he named his son Martin, and the Cantrell’s up to Richard was involved with John Martins family, I am assuming that John’s middle name would of been John Martin Cantrell..I understand that this John has been said to have came from John (1723) however, Strong evidence suggests that this John M who owned a Mill was actually the son of Isaac and Elizabeth Cantrell, as it is he who was in South Carolina in 1790 as well as 1800 and was married to Elizabeth and died in 1824. He was a deacon at the Buck Creek Church, he lived next door to Isaac, his will was read at the church. and every document including his will, probate and land deeds were signed by Isaac’s kids, and at the auction it was again Isaac’s kids who were buying stuff up….If John M was the son of John then where were his family???? There is more evidence that John M was the son of Isaac then of John (1724)….and again, Richard didn’t die in 1753…However, if you came from John M and Elizabeth, I descend from their daughty Sinthy who married Moses Young…..glad you wrote..

      • sandy witbeck says:

Hi, please tell me more about James Buchanan Cantrell, as my GGGrandfather is James Buchanan who I can find no history on? My info is on Ancestry.com, as well as GEDmatch.

  6. Sandy Cole says:

Hello, I have been researching the Cantrells for over 30 years and have come up with a lot of docuumentation through out the years….A Mrs Colgate who was an aunt to Richard Cantwell, was the one that was protesting the survey against her nephew’s land. RICHARD CANTWELL…not out Richard Cantrell…..Both Richard and Dorothy had already passed away by 1732….THE Rihcard Cantrell of 1666 who was baptised in Derbyshire, England, married and had children and died in England……Joseph did not marry Catharina Heath….John and Hanna Heath of Mass did not have a daughter, Catharina……They were also English….and our Catharina was swedish……

  7. sandy witbeck says:

Hi, I am researching Thomas and charlotta Cantrell, Boone Co. Arkansas moved there from North Carolina in 1870. Lots of unanswered questions regarding their daughter Nancy Cantrell-Honeycutt, who is my grandmother. Would love to share stories, I am in California and too far to do local research. Thanks Sandy

      • Judy says:

        Sandy,
My grandmothers mother was Nancy out of Vinita Ok is that what u were looking for? Her name was Byrd Adair Dameron

      • sandy witbeck says:

My grandmother was Nancy Cantrell-Honeycutt of Harrison , Arkansas. She died in Missouri in about the 1960s of Pneumonia. As far as I know she was never in Oklahoma. Her husband left her and moved to Oklahoma where he died in the 1920s. Jake Honeycutt.

  9. Sandy Cole says:

The two links which were mentioned has a lot of incorrect information. Christie states in her book, that she did not know the names of John’s children. Then she started writing them and adding in names that belonged to brother, Isaac and James. John Cantrell (1724) did not move to Spartanburg, he died in North Carolina. He also was not married to a Jane nor Miss Britain as I have found the wills of the Britains and they had no daughter who married a Cantrell….

  10. Judy Cantrell says:

I was born in 1954 to Pierce E Cantrell and Marie Moulder Musgrave Cantrell. My father was born in Vinita Ok and mother in Tulsa Ok.
Pierce Cantrell father was George Pierce Cantrell whose father was Rev John M Cantrell who had at least 8 Children also from Yellville AR.
My grandmother was Bird Adair dameron Cantrell of Cherokee lineage. One cool talented lady.

    • Brian Anthony Cantrell says:

I know my direct line of Cantrell comes from Spartanburg, SC. The only one who was born there in my direct line was Andrew Jackson Cantrell in 1826. I know that because ive been to his grave in hamilton county TN. After him all the Cantrells that I know were born in Either Bradley or Hamilton county Tennessee. I have an account on ancestry.com and So far i believe i am a descendant of Richard Cantrill, but if anyone has more info i would love to know. Thank you

      • coachtommyschilli says:

I’d like to know if my great great grandfather Denis Cantrell and this Andrew Jackson Cantrell from South Carolina were brothers? It’s Intresting that I’ve also traced 2 different Sherman Cantrell’s and 2 different Denis Cantrells. I think I get confused because a lot of these ancestors had kids and named them the same name I think.

    • coachtommyschilli says:

Who was Andrews brothers? I have a great great grandfather from South Carolina named Denis Cantrell. He moved to Alabama had 2 sons as far as I know. Thomas Cantrell and Sherman Cantrell with his wife Sarah.

I don’t remember any contact though on her side.

  12. Sandy Cole says:

I have a lot of those Cantrell’s born about that time who was he married to???and death date?

    • Brian Cantrell says:

Died Feb 11 1931 spouse Margaret Johnson. If you leave ur email i can mail you his death certificate, a photo, and a newspaper story they ran on him a few days before he died because he lived to be 104 years old. In the newspaper he talks about being from spartanburg, his civil war service, and how his ancestors fought in the american revolution.

      • Its really cool cuz in the newspaper (the bradley county Daily Banner*, which is still an active paper in bradley county) he talks about the first time he voted for a president which was Zachary Taylor.

    • Brian Cantrell says:

      Andrew Jackson Cantrell
Born: 14 Feb 1826 Spartanburg, SC
Died: 11 Feb 1931 Bradley County, TN

      Spouse: Margaret Johnson
(I believe he was married twice but Margaret Johnson is listed on his grave)

I have lots of documents on him from newspapers to family census and his death certificate. Also some photos.

  14. Catherine says:

I am looking for Cantrell’s from West Tennessee. My grandmother was Ona Louise Cantrell. She had sisters named Wille and Maggie and their father’s name was William. That is all I know. They lived in Milan Tn.,which is Gibson County and Jackson Tn in Madison County. Is anyone on here familiar with Cantrell’s from this area? I have no documents, so anything would be so helpful. Thank you!

    • Donna Cantrell-White says:

I am a Cantrell from Ripley, TN. This is in West TN. My grandparents were Leon Cantrell and Kate Cantrell. They had 3 sons… Jerry, Charles, Steve, and one daughter Sherrin Cantrell.

    • Tammy Ford says:

Hi Catherine, I did a little research for you and came up with this information.
Ona Louise Cantrell’s parents were Charles Franklin Cantrell born Jan. 1879 ln Gibson Tn. and Pearl L. Lewis born Aug. 1880. They were married 1898 in Gibson Tn.They are in Gibson in 1900. Haven’t been able to find them in 1910. In 1920 Pearl is living in Jackson Madison Tn. With daughters Willie 14 and 12 yr. Old Ona. I don’t know where Charles is I do know he was in the service at age 40.. In 1930 Willie and Ona are living with their father and the census states he is divorced. In 1940 he is living alone in Jackson Madison Tn. He died Sept. 11, 1956.The informant was Ona and it states that his parents were William and Nan Ragsdale. Her name was probably Nancy. Charles is buried in Walnut Grove cemetery. You can find him on Find a grave.Haven’t found anything on Maggie. Do you know if Maggie was older? You probably know this ,but Ona married Ives Robert Magill. If you google their names you will come up with their daughter Nancy Ona Brownings obit. Hopes this helps. Tammy Ford

      • coachtommyschilli says:

That’s intresting. That in my tree I see 2 Williams. 1 William D. Cantrell son of Thomas Cantrell (Alabama) and Elsie Beddingfield. And the other is William M Cantrell son of Sherman Cantrell (Alabama) and Lula C. Cantrell . Both Williams are the grandsons of Denis C. Cantrell, and Sarah Cantrell (South Carolina).

    • Tammy Ford says:

I think I replayed under the wrong name. Look under Donna Cantrell Whites name.

    • Tammy Ford says:

Catherine, done some more research and came up with this
Charles Franklin Cantrell is the son of William Monroe Cantrell and Elizabeth Hopper.William was first married to Lousia unknown. and had a son John. In 1871 he married Elizabeth and in 1900 he is living with a Nancy and son Bob. William is the son of Berry Cantrell and Mahalah Reynolds Berry ,son of Issac Cantrell Jr. Williams death record states that his father was born in S.C. That would be Spartanburg S.C. My daughter is a distant cousin of you. You are also a distant cousin of Rosemary on this site. Merry Christmas!

  15. Sandy (Cole) Wainwright says:

    Hello.
I have been researching the above William myself and have discovered that he was not from an Isaac Jr….Berry was the son of Isaac and Charlotte…This (father) was not the son of Isaac, son of Joseph, but a grandson….

    • Tammy Ford says:

I do believe I said William was the son of Berry and Mahala Reynolds Cantrell. I will have to go back and read what I wrote. Mahala is in the 1850 Gibson Tn census with children John, Sarah, and William. She is in the 1870 census with William and a 17 yr. old wife Lousia and their two yr.old son John. John Monroe Cantrell’s death record states that his parents were William Monroe Cantrell and Elizabeth Hopper. William married Elizabeth when John was about 3. Yes, Berry was the son of Issac and Charlotte. Charlotte is in the 1830 and 40 Gibson Tn census. Thanks for replying.

  16. Sandy (Cole) Wainwright says:

William, son of Berry didn’t marry ruth Crocker??? Thanks for any imput, this line is confusing lol

    • Tammy Ford says:

Who said anything about a Ruth Crocker? William, son of Berry and Mahala Reynolds, married Lousia unknown and had a son John Monroe Cantrell. When John was about 3, William married Elizabeth Hopper. In 1896 William married Nancy J. Reeves, who’s maiden name may have been Ragsdale

  17. coachtommyschilli says:

My distant great grand father was Denis C Cantrell born in South Carolina in abt.1823. His wife Sarah was born in South Carolina as well. I know that their 2 sons were born in Alabama. Sherman Cantrell and my distant great grandfather Thomas Cantrell. Denis Cantrell is as far back as can find anything I’m wondering if you know this family line and how far have you traced back the Cantrell line? My father was born Thomas Cantrell but changed his name before I was born. My name is Kahlil Karska Gibran but my 4 boys carry the Cantrell name. Thomas Cantrell, Lucius Cantrell, Deeds Cantrell, and Leonidas Cantrell.

  18. coachtommyschilli says:

Also my Great grandfather Thomas Andrew Cantrell was born in Alabama, moved to Oklahoma won my great grandmother in a bar fight. They had 7 children I know of. Floyd my grandfather, james, Willie, Nora, Agnes, Myrtle, and Audrey. The Cantrell family in Oregon flourish In the Lane county area. I moved to Florida now with my 4 boys and wife.

  19. Sandy (Cole) Wainwright says:

was he born in 1930 in Lane County, Oregon? that is all I have on him, but Denis Cantrell was the son of Lanceford Cantrell who was the son of Isaac Cantrell who was the son of Joseph Cantrell who was the son of Richard and Dorothy (Jones) Cantrell

    • coachtommyschilli says:

No. My great grandfather Thomas Andrew Cantrell was born in Alabama he then moved to Oklahoma, then after he met his wife Emma and had his 7 children they all moved to Oregon where they were prosperous in farming in the Lane county area.

    • coachtommyschilli says:

As far as Dennis Cantrell it looks like there were 2 Dennis Cantrell’s out there in South Carolina. One looks like he had 5 or 6 kids and moved to Georgia from South Carolina, the other Dennis Cantrell record I found had 2 boys Sherman and Thomas and they were born in Alabama as far as I know. Why am I finding 2 Dennis Cantrell’s from South Carolina born around the same time? I wish the records were a little more clear.

    • coachtommyschilli says:

1930 is I believe when Thomas Andrew Cantrell moved to Oregon with his family from Oklahoma.

    • Laura Dillon Jones says:

      Hello Richard,
I was looking for information on my grandmothers side. Her name was Edith Cantrell and I know she had Cherokee Indian in her history.

  21. Hi, I’m the president Historic Highlandlake, Inc, a small historical society near Mead, Colorado. We own the Highlandlake Pioneer Cemetery. I have two references to a Mr. Cantrall/Cantrell of Lyons (Colorado) who was buried in an unmarked grave outside the perimeters of the surveyed lots. He was buried on Sept. 4, 1898. We believe we have located his grave, and would like to mark it. However, there are so many questions. What was his first name? Why was he buried in our cemetery, a good 20+ miles away from where he lived? I can find no connection between a Cantrell/Cantrall family and families in Highlandlake, although there could possibly be one. Also, why was he buried so far outside of the established cemetery plat? The Highlandlake Cemetery was active back then, and very good records were kept, but there is no mention of him in them.

    Anyone have any ideas?

  22. Judy Cantrell says:

I think your mom might remember Lisa as they met when they were teenagers. I am trying to find a photo of him to share with my uncle and the 1/2 sister he connected with. Do you know where I can find one?

  26. Does anyone have a missing “Mr. Cantrell/Cantrall” who went to Boulder County, Colorado, perhaps to work in the sandstone quarries in Lyons, Boulder, Colorado. He is buried in Highlandlake Pioneer Cemetery, in Weld County, Colorado in an unmarked grave. The only information we (Historic Highlandlake, Inc) have on him is that his name was Mr. Cantrell from Lyons and that he was buried on Sept. 4, 1898, in our cemetery. He is buried outside of the surveyed boundaries, even though our Potter’s Field was available and the cemetery itself was still active. That he was transported almost 20 miles away from where he died, bypassing several cemeteries along the way, to a small cemetery where he apparently had no family, and was buried outside of the dedicated sections, tells me that probably he either committed suicide or such committed some kind of criminal behavior. There appears that there are no copies left from the Lyons newspaper at the time, and neither the Boulder or Longmont papers mention anything untoward happening, that I can find anyway.

I did find a few Cantrell/Cantrall’s living in the Denver area at the time but haven’t been able to connect this man to them.

    Any suggestions or Ideas?
    Thanks,
Pauli Driver Smith, President, Historic Highlandlake, Inc

My Name is Justin Cantrell and I am a descendant of John Cantrell who is the son of Issac Cantrell and Talitha Cloud

    • Frances Day says:

      Fran Day

      • Sandy (Cole) Wainwright says:

Hello Justin, You are talking about John M who married his cousin, Elizabeth Cantrell? and Isaac who married an Elizabeth, last name unknown……Isaac, son of Joseph, son of Richard did not marry a Talitha Cloud, that rumor was started by Union Bethel in 1927…he said she was the daughter of Jeremiah Cloud and after looking at the will, Jeremiah did not have a daughter, Talitha….it has been proven that Isaac married twice, once to an Elizabeth and the second wife, Mary……so, after John who do you descend from? I descend from their daughter, Cythinia Cantrell

I’m related to John Cantrell (b 1751 in Orange County) and I am wondering if anyone has done any research to understand the lives of the people that were enslaved by Cantrells. I know that John Cantrell owned at least four people (names are listed as Jesse, Beck, and there was a woman with her child whose name is hard to decipher), as per an appraisal of his estate. I would like to know more about the lives of people enslaved by our family members and about the lives of their descendants, so any help doing research in this vein would be very helpful. Thank you.

    • Brenda Shirley says:

My grandmother was Fannie Cantrell and I remember her telling me and some of my siblings that when she was a little girl her family had slaves but they were free and could do whatever they wanted and go where ever they wanted. They wanted to follow them where ever they moved to. We have a family cemetary in Atlanta, Texas and she said that the slaves were buried there and she didn’t remember their names. I wish my grandmother was still alive I would pay more attention to all the stories she told about her family life growing up. She also said that her family had Cherokee in them. She does look like she has indian in her.

My 6th Great Grandfather was Isaac Cantrell. My Grandmother was Essie Olive Cantrell Holt. I started researching not long ago. I have 7 children and so far 6 Grandchildren. I want to pass all this information down to my family. We were told growing up that my Grandmother Essie was of Cherokee descent through her father Andrew Jackson Cantrell (Jack Cantrell). I remember my mother talking about her Uncle Robert Cantrell. He was a dark skin color with long dark hair. He had the family history but when he passed away it went with him. He went to live with my 2nd Great Grandmother Sarah Jane Seal Nixon at the age of 9. My Grandmother Essie was sent to live with relatives in Sugartown,LA. Their mother passed away from child birth. Her name was Eleanor Pearl Nixon Cantrell. My Great grandfather Andrew Jackson Cantrell(Jack) left and no other info has been found. I have so many questions. Starting with our heritage, are we Cherokee? What are the last names of the slaves owned by 6th Great Grandfather Isaac Cantrell? Who raised my Grandmother? She was a God sent Angel!! I always noticed my Mother,Aunts, and Uncles had a darker skin color. If anyone has any information I love learning information on my family. Pictures would be fantastic!! I am a local historian in Mead, Colorado. Our local Highlandlake & Mead Historical society has someone, known as as “Mr. Cantrell from Lyons” buried in our pioneer cemetery. He was buried on 4 Sep 1898. I discovered that a Frank Kerr also of Lyons, but who had family in Highlandlake, purchased his grave plot on 3 Sep. His wife’s maiden name was Susie Cantrell. I’m trying to find out what her connection to Mr. Cantrell was. A brother? Her father?

Anyone know anything about a man named Cantrell who lived in Lyons, Boulder County, Colorado in the the 1890s? He does not show up on any of the census records, and newspapers from that era in Lyons no longer exist. Outside of a brief notation in the Highlandlake column of the Longmont Ledger and a sentence in the church record books noting the burial, I haven’t been able to find any other information.

By the way, I also have Cantrell’s in my family lines, but I haven’t dug deeper into those yet.

    • I have no information on the Cantrell family other than knowing Eliza Cantrell, from Spartanburg SC, born 1838, was the matriarch of our side of the family. She married Joab/Joal M. Deaton/Deyton in 1860/1861.

They had one biological child together, Silas Dayton, before Joab died of fever outside Richmond VA while serving with the Georgia Volunteers of the CSA, Company D, in 1862.

Eliza went on to have three additional children by different men over the next few years. One of which was a son, John Starlin Deaton. He was Deaton in name only, as his bloodline was reported to be Hedden from Towns County Georgia.
